The .243 Winchester is a popular choice, offering excellent accuracy, minimal recoil, and versatile bullet options that make it great for smaller game. The .25-06 Remington builds on that performance with higher velocities and flatter trajectories, providing an extended effective range and reliable expansion on smaller game.

Effective rifle calibers for hunting medium-sized game combine accuracy, moderate recoil, and sufficient energy to ensure clean, ethical harvests. The .308 Winchester is a highly trusted choice, known for its consistent accuracy, excellent penetration, and versatility across a wide range of bullet weights, making it ideal for medium game. The 7mm-08 Remington is equally effective, offering mild recoil, efficient ballistics, and high sectional density bullets that deliver deep penetration and reliable performance at both short and moderate distances. Another popular medium-game caliber is the .30-06 Springfield for its added versatility and longer-range capability.

The .30-06 Springfield, 7mm Remington Magnum, .300 Winchester Magnum, and .338 Winchester Magnum are all highly effective calibers for pursuing large exotic game, each offering distinct advantages in the field. The .30-06 Springfield is known for its versatility and deep penetration, making it capable of cleanly taking a wide range of large-bodied exotics with proper bullet selection. The 7mm Magnum excels in accuracy and flat trajectory, allowing for precise shot placement at longer distances while maintaining sufficient energy for ethical harvests. The .300 Winchester Magnum delivers outstanding power and range, offering excellent knockdown performance on tough, heavy-boned animals. The .338 Winchester Magnum stands out with exceptional stopping power and penetration, giving hunters added confidence on demanding game. Overall, these calibers are trusted choices for responsible and effective big exotic game hunting.

The .375 H&H Magnum and .416 Rigby are well-established cartridges renowned for their effectiveness on Cape buffalo, where deep penetration, reliability, and stopping power are critical. The .375 H&H Magnum is commonly seen as the minimum ideal caliber for buffalo, providing excellent penetration with premium bullets, manageable recoil, and the versatility to handle follow up shots quickly while still delivering enough power to break heavy bone and reach vital organs. The .416 Rigby offers a notable boost in authority, launching heavy bullets that deliver exceptional straight-line penetration and decisive terminal performance. Other favored and proven calibers for Cape buffalo include the .458 Winchester Magnum for maximum stopping power at close range, and the .470 Nitro Express, a classic big-bore choice trusted for its devastating effectiveness.
For hunting larger, tougher exotic game such as Kudu, Sable, or Wildebeest, a minimum draw weight of 60 pounds is recommended. Ideally, 70 pounds or more provides better penetration and energy transfer.
A higher arrow speed (measured in feet per second, fps) is beneficial for hunting. Look for a bow with an IBO speed rating of at least 300 fps. Faster arrows result in flatter trajectories and more kinetic energy upon impact. Use heavy, durable arrows suited for large game, typically weighing 400-500 grains. Broadheads should be razor-sharp and strong, preferably fixed blade or high-quality mechanical broadheads designed for deep penetration. Arrow speed versus arrow weight is a trade-off; it is a combination of these two factors and the kinetic energy at impact that makes the difference. Sometimes, a heavier-weight arrow flying at a slower speed may be the right choice, even though the trajectory won't be as flat.
A let-off of 70-85% is typical in modern compound bows. Higher let-off helps you hold the bow with less effort, giving you more time to aim accurately.
Hunting bows should be as quiet as possible to prevent spooking game. Look for bows with built-in dampening systems or think about adding dampeners to reduce noise and vibration.
