
Meat hunting is a practical and sustainable way to get high-quality protein while supporting sound wildlife management. With no closed season on non-native species, exotics can be harvested year-round, making them ideal for consistently filling the freezer rather than hunting only during a short window. Axis venison is widely prized for being exceptionally mild, tender, and free of the strong “rut” flavor found in some native deer, mainly because Axis breed year-round and don’t experience a traditional rut. Nutritionally, it’s very lean, high in protein, and lower in fat and calories than beef. It’s a good option for Texas hunters who focus on ethical harvest and putting meat on the table.
